Key Stats: 3B Mason McCoy 3-for-5, 2 2B; DH Jason Heyward 1-for-5, 2B, 3 K; 2B Nate Mondou 3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI; SS Clay Dungan 1-for-4, HR (4), BB; RHP Matt Waldron 5.2 IP, 3 H, ER, 5 K, BB; RHP Bryan Hoeing IP, K; RHP Ron Marinaccio IP, H
Prospect Watch: Matt Waldron turned in his longest and best outing of 2025, delivering five and two-thirds innings of one-run ball to help the Chihuahuas claim the victory and earn a split of the series. Waldron, who was optioned to El Paso at the start of the month as his rehab assignment ended, relied on his knuckleball for 44 of 90 pitches, having it flutter into the zone 48% of the time. Waldron, 28, has posted a 2.87 ERA over his three starts this month, striking out 14 against four walks in 15.2 innings. … Bryan Hoeing, whose rehab assignment was already extended once, is coming up on a likely decision day. Working on one day’s rest, the right-handed reliever struck out one in a clean inning. After interrupting his work for a week at the end of May, he’s now appeared four times in in eight days. He gave up one run on three hits in three innings in the series. … Clay Dungan homered on the second pitch of the game, Mason McCoy followed with a double, and by the middle of the first, the Chihuahuas had a 3-0 lead. McCoy finished the day 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and scored three runs. He’s hit in five straight games since being optioned back to El Paso at the end of his rehab assignment. The eight-year minor league veteran had been with the big league club for a week when he dislocated his pinky diving back into first base and had to go on the IL. … Jason Heyward scorched a 107.6 mph RBI double to right in his fifth trip to the plate, but was otherwise held in check. In three games, all played at designated hitter, he has two hits and seven strikeouts in 13 plate appearances.

Key Stats: DH Brandon Valenzuela 2-for-5, HR (9), 2 RBI; LF Kai Murphy 2-for-3, 2 BB; RF Moisés Gómez 3-for-5, 2 2B; LHP Jagger Haynes 4.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R (3 ER), 4 K, 2 BB, HBP; RHP Tyson Neighbors 2 IP, H, ER, 2 K, WP; RHP Manuel Castro 2 IP, 5 K
Prospect Watch: The Missions gave up leads of 2-0, 3-2, and 5-4 before Kai Murphy smacked a one-out, bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to drive in two and have Romeo Sanabria come all the way around from first on an error to seal the victory. Murphy had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. The 24-year-old has 11 hits and 11 walks in 44 plate appearances this month, but has connected on only one extra-base hit. On the year, he has a .648 OPS. … Outfielder Moisés Gómez returned to the lineup for the first time in a week and had a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit game. Three of the big man’s five hits this month have gone for extra-bases, but his on-base percentage since the start of May is hovering at just .283. … Brandon Valenzuela, in the lineup as the designated hitter, fully enjoyed his trip to elevation this week. The switch-hitter connected on his ninth homer of the year as part of a two-hit game Sunday. It capped a series in which he collected two doubles, his first triple since 2023, and a pair of homers to slug .704. He’ll look to carry the momentum forward as the Missions head home. … Starter Jagger Haynes never found a rhythm, giving up solo runs in each inning from the second to the fifth. The lefty finished his day with four strikeouts and two walks, tossing 72 pitches in 4.1 innings of work. Haynes drew the short straw for two starts in the Texas Panhandle this series, but came away with a sub-3.00 ERA despite a 6:6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 9.1 innings. … Arizona’s one-time top prospect Kristian Robinson jumped a first pitch fastball from Tyson Neighbors in the seventh inning for a homer that tied the game. It was the only hit Neighbors allowed in two innings of work as he struck out two. The nasty righty had given up just one homer through his first 27.1 professional innings, but was tagged for two in his first Texas League series. He’ll look forward to getting back to sea level for the next series. … Manuel Castro was absolutely dominant picking up the win, striking out five of the six batters he faced and getting six whiffs on 10 swings and throwing 17 of 21 pitches for strikes. The undersized righty has had a pair of meltdown outings that have inflated his ERA to 4.38 on the year, but he’s punched out 40 of the 102 batters he’s faced while holding opponents to a .186 average in his first extended taste of Double-A.
TinCaps 5, South Bend Cubs 4
Key Stats: DH Leo De Vries 1-for-2, 3 BB; C Oswaldo Linares 1-for-3, BB; CF Kai Roberts 0-for-1, BB, HBP, SF, SB (12); LHP Luis Gutierrez 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 3 K, BB; RHP Sean Barnett 0.1 IP, H, 2 ER, 2 BB; RHP Ruben Galindo 1.2 IP, H, 2 K; RHP Garrett Hawkins IP, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps used a strong High-A debut from Luis Gutierrez and just enough late offense to squeak out the win and avoid being swept by South Bend. Gutierrez, 21, was promoted from Lake Elsinore after posting a 1.56 ERA across his final six starts and 34.2 innings in the Cal League. He continued the recent trend, allowing just one run over six strong innings of work. The lefty, whose changeup has the potential to be an elite pitch, only struck out three, but issued only one free pass. Five years elapsed between when the Venezuelan signed and when he finally reached full-season ball last summer, but he’s making up for lost time now. If he continues to get results, the Padres will need to decide whether to put him on the 40-player roster this winter. … After Sean Barnett once again struggled with his command, righty Ruben Galindo turned in 1.2 stellar innings of relief a day after his rehab assignment to the ACL was ended and he rejoined the active roster. The 24-year-old from Colombia, who had elbow surgery last year, allowed just one ball to leave the infield while striking out two. This will be the third consecutive season he has logged time with Fort Wayne, but he could be destined for San Antonio sooner than later. … Speaking of pitchers who could get a chance at a higher level, Garrett Hawkins struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect inning to record his second save of the year. The big Canadian righty now sports a stellar 37:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 27.1 innings, punching out 34.3% of the batters he’s faced. Now 22 months removed from Tommy John surgery, he has little left to prove in his first year working as a reliever at High A. … The TinCaps leveraged 11 walks to put up five runs despite only collecting three hits. Outfielder Kai Roberts reached base twice without the benefit of a hit. The fleet center fielder drew a walk, after which he swiped his 12th base in 20 Midwest League games, and later was hit by a pitch. The 24-year-old drew two walks in each of his first two games with the TinCaps, but has only had three more since.
Visalia Rawhide 10, Storm 6 (10 innings)
Key Stats: SS Cobb Hightower 1-for-3, BB, 2B; 2B/SS Ryan Jackson 2-for-6; DH Kavares Tears 2-for-5, 2B, HR (7), 3 RBI, CS (3); 1B Victor Figueroa 1-for-4, HR (4), BB, 2 E (5); RHP Will Varmette 2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R (1 ER), K, BB; RHP Johan Moreno 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 5 K, 3 BB

Prospect Watch: In a game of big innings, wild swings, and sloppy defense, the Storm dropped the series finale to Visalia, which put up a four spot in the 10th inning. After a short start from Will Varmette, who was charged with three unearned errors when Victor Figueroa made a pair of errors behind him in the third inning, Johan Moreno turned in his longest and best outing of the year. The 22-year-old, who struggled in his first exposure to the Cal League last year, worked five innings of one-run ball, striking out five while allowing only two hits. Moreno got hit hard early in the year and carried a double-digit ERA into the middle of May, but he’s found a rhythm over the last month, giving up five earned runs over the last 18.2 innings with an 18:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Moreno has struggled with command all year, but the more recent walk rates would be sustainable if he can maintain them. … Down 5-1 in the fifth, Elsinore rallied for five runs aided by three Visalia pitchers who combined to issue five walks in the frame. Kavares Tears had the big blast of the day with a laser beam of a three-run homer to right-center. The powerful DH has been streaky in his first professional campaign, but has now homered in back-to-back games after snapping an 0-for-28 streak earlier in the homestand. Encouragingly, he hasn’t struck out in his last three games, one short of the longest streak in his nascent career. … Figueroa, who committed two of the club’s five errors on the day, also clubbed his fourth homer in 21 Cal League games and drew a walk. The big left-hander is slugging .541, which would be second on the circuit if he had enough at-bats to qualify. The big man has drawn 15 walks while striking out only 12 times in 89 plate appearances. … Shortstop Cobb Hightower returned to the lineup after missing nearly four weeks with a knee injury. The 20-year-old barely missed a beat, collecting a walk and a double in four trips to the plate before being lifted from the game. Encouragingly, he was able to play shortstop effectively. He’ll likely get a shot to play a full game on Tuesday after Monday’s rest day.
